Bookplate of Arthur Digby Besant, 1914 and Gavin Stamp, 1978. Arthur Digby Besant was the son of Annie Besant and joined the Theosophical Society in 1893. Architectural bookplate on paste down opposite that of Gavin's. There is also a signature on the printed end paper of F Besant dated 1865.

    66pp pamphlet. 8vo. Modern binding, cloth with marbled boards and gilt lettering on the spine and new end papers. Internally the original pages are a bit dusty with red numbering in crayon at top edge of each page. Old ownership stamp, very faint on title page. Freeman had written a major piece on the restoration of church buildings in 1846 and this paper is significant in proposing eclectic restoration as a way forward between destructive and conservative. He was a near contemporary of Ruskin and his writings on restoration are central in the mid 19th century debate on the approach to restoration in which he advocated a balanced approach. Scarce.

A sumptuous facsimile edition, the first published edition thus, of the surviving Red Books; Anthony House, Cornwall; Attingham Park, Shropshire and Sheringham Hall, Norfolk, with an explanatory volume by Edward Mallins containing recent photographs by Eric de Mare. Repton's drawings are meticulously reproduced in collotype and printed on wove paper as close as possible to the original Whatman stock.

Loosely inserted 4 colour photographs 6" x 4" of works of art. pp 85-88 have been cut out and folded horizontally at one point, now loosely inserted back in the correct sequence, else very good. The Special Unit was established at Glasgow's Barlinnie Prison in 1973 to house prisoners who could not be contained within the traditional prison system. Working along therapeutic lines, there was a heavy emphasis on creativity and this book charts the development of the Unit.

A brilliant example of journals at the time demonstrating the whole range of interests the Victorians held in design matters. Cassell's Technical Educator was the most successful of the Victorian self-help part-works. It was a companion to Cassell's New Popular Educator. It appears to have come out in fortnightly issues over a period of 2 years - although most surviving copies seem to have been sold as two or four volume sets. The intended readership was evidently the upwardly mobile class of skilled artisans and mechanics.

Tower Bridge was the creation of architect Sir Horace Jones and civil engineer Sir John Wolfe Barry. It took eight years to complete and was officially opened on 30 June 1894 by the Prince and Princess of Wales This is a very useful technical account of the bridge construction by Tuit who was 'Engineer to Sir William Arrol and Co., one of the firms of Contractors for the bridge construction.

This guide was a one of a number produced in response to the development of the tourist trail in this part of Wales which remains popular today.
