    ATKINSON Thomas Witlam (1799-1861) [?]
Watercolour Prespective of the Interior of Scarthingwell Roman Catholic Church of Immaculate Conception and St John of Beverley, North Yorkshire

Stunning interior view of this ornate Neo-Norman church. Showing its lavish plasterwork decoration, original polychromy and stained glass by William Wailes. Watercolour. 420x610mm possibly by Thomas Atkinson, brother of one of the Architect brothers whose practice was originally that of John Carr of York. Built by a member of the Atkinson family for Lord Hawkes of Scarthingwell Hall in 1854, the church originally functioned as a private chapel. The Hall was demolished in the 1960s (though some of the landscaped grounds survive) and the church now stands alone but adjacent to modern sheltered housing. This water colour is of particular interest as it shows the vibrant original colour scheme, now whitewashed over.
