This rudimentary study was part of a series which extended to 130 volumes on various technical and design subjects.

An early collaborative venture between Gavin Stamp and Colin Amery which identified over one hundred of London's most significant Victorian buildings from St Pancreas Station and Hotel to the Infant Orphan's Asylum in Wanstead. This book provides an explanation in part for the huge collection of London related commentaries of the period that were illustrated with photographic plates and which Gavin Stamp had in his collection.

The American Vitruvius refers extensively to European design, taking many examples from Hegemann's earlier book on the Berlin 1910 exhibition. Hegemann spent his career between Germany and the USA. Initially working in the USA immediately after World War I, he advised on the planning of Boston. He returned to Germany but ultimately fled on the rise to power of Hitler. Beautifully illustrated book .
