It was promoted as an exhibition of contemporary town planning. This is the accompanying book. The project, including a new railway station and was promoted by a company founded by three Liberal MP's who had links with the Hampstead Garden Suburb. notably, Herbert Raphael, John Tudor Walters and Charles McCurdy. Known as the "exhibition houses" and set in their garden suburb the houses still survive and are fine examples of their time. Among the 100 architects who designed and built for the exhibition included C. R. Ashbee, M. H. Baillie Scott, William Curtis Green, Charles S. Spooner, Clough Williams-Ellis, Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin. Rare.

Blind stamped cloth. 3rd edition. 1856-1857 Originally produced [ in parts ] by Langley Banks, a specialist in staircase carpentry; Banks' own designs account for the first 27 of these plates and are signed; the remainder of the plates are by five other specialists (Mr Clarke, Mr Foster, Mr Galpin, Mr Weston). Vol1 Frontis showing Crystal Palace Staircase, title page,[4] 12pp + 24 plates with facing explanatory texts. Vo. 2 plates 25-53 with facing texts + [4]pp note at end on Mr Weston's handrailing system + 3 fold out plates of newel posts and hand railing examples, these last plates badly foxed. Hard to find set.

Green cloth, gilt titles on spine. Very good although some short splits along outer hinges. Copy of W J Hindle with signature of ownership on half title. He was an architect in Barnsley and the book has his practice stamp on the front paste down.

Craig Ellwood was one of the architects who during the 50s took part (alongside Charles Eames, Pierre Koenig and Rafael Soriano, among others) in the celebrated Case Study Houses programme organized by the "Arts and Architecture" magazine with the aim of promoting modern architecture and experimentation with new industrial materials in domestic architecture. This book is a useful account of some of his projects and is beautifully illustrated.

Stoilov famously designed the brutalist Buzludzha Memorial House which is now abandoned, perched on a Balkan mountain, following the end of the political regime that built it. This and other memorials alongside commercial and domestic buildings are featured in this book.
