John Stevenson, in 1871, set up in business in Belfast as a printer; his first partnership was dissolved after a few years, and in April 1876 he joined Alexander McCaw (d. 1878) and James Porter Orr in a partnership. The firm, known as McCaw, Stevenson & Orr, prospered and expanded into larger premises in Linenhall St.; much of the success of the Linenhall Works was based on products developed by Stevenson. He patented several inventions; in 1880, he took out a patent for coloured transparent window decorations with the trademark 'Glacier'.

    174pp, illustrated. Decorated wrappers. 8vo. Rounded edges. Age toned else good copy. Illustrated with b/w plates and period ads and includes large fold out plan in colour at the end of the Crystal Palace Park and layout of the buildings. The Festival of Empire aimed to promote the British Empire to the British public. It was the largest event held at Crystal Palace since its establishment in 1853 on the site in Sydenham. From page 122 the booklet describes the Fashion Fair held alongside the main event and is illustrated with contemporary fashion which is described alongside lists of suppliers. Useful publication for the whole event which summarises all the contributions national and international.

    95pp b/w + colour illustrations. Small 4to. Perfect binding, illustrated wrappers. Very small chip to the head of the spine otherwise an almost fine copy. Photographic study with an interesting point of reference. The book was conceived after the publishers were researching imagery for a book on world religions. The adornments of different ceremonial dress reminded them of portraits of contemporary punks. The book contains images of punks juxtaposed with images of people wearing traditional dress. Accompanying text written by Val Hennessey. Excellent piece of fashion research material. Uncommon.

Lovely colour image of the main site and its pavilions, free gift which was as a souvenir of the World's Fair by the firm. Sloan's Liniment was originally sold by Dr. Earl S. Sloan as a treatment to relieve pain associated with rheumatism and arthritis; originally used on horses and was eventually marketed for human use.

Little had been responsible for the iconic black and gold Biba logo of the 60s and dreamed up most of the company's designs.
