    Each volume with a staple-bound booklet and 100 loose colour sheets, in folding hardcover case, in slipcase. The colours consist of a spectrum range of 64 full hues, 26 (lighter) tints and 10 (darker) shades of the 64 full hues. Loosely inserted in volume one is a sheet of black card with central square cut out to allow each colour to be isolated by the viewer. The charts are known also as the Wilson Colour Charts.

The work is targeted at disadvantaged families and young people (especially young girls and young women in science and technology), children with learning disabilities and people returning to education…

    140pp + 2pp period ads. 195 b/w plates. Small 4to. Very good copy. On modern art pottery - a survey covering major designers including Bernard Leach, Picasso and many others. Text in German. Walter Dexel is one of the outstanding exponents of 1920s Constructivism. In 1918 Walter Dexel became head of exhibitions in Jena, where he organised first exhibitions with Campendonk and later with Bauhaus artists like Moholy-Nagy. From 1928 to 1935 Walter Dexel worked as a lecturer for graphic design at the Magdeburg "Kunstgewerbeschule". He was dismissed from his post in 1935 by the Nazis but after the war continued to work in the arts and gained critical acclaim as an art historian, exhibition maker, theorist.

Each plates tissue guarded with tracing patterns to aid making up the articles illustrated. Ribbon tied paper backed folio 260 x 370mm. New spine in sympathetic paper to make a good copy. Issued by L'Academie d'Arts Decoratifs in Paris and made at a time where handicrafts was in the ascendancy.

    Four volumes. Volume I, text, xx+ 532pp illustrated Volume 2-4 plates comprising 262 b/w plates & 28 in colour plates. Text volume is bound in wrappers and the plates volumes are loose leaf each with printed folio wrappers protected in cloth backed boards to protect the portfolios. Very nice set. Spine of text volume has small tears at the head and base of the spine and some annotations in margins. Exceptionally thorough but standard work on the stained glass at Chartres. Hard to find in this edition. For sale with Houvet's monograph on Chartres Cathedral [ 1930] a classic text [ in French] which stands alone yet complements this set to make five volumes in all.

The series is unified by distinctive black covers with white rulings although each sports a different cover image either photographic or typographic. The first number, A Dictionary of Graphic Clichés in 1975 by Philip Thompson and Peter Davenport contains examples of how designers have used these clichés as a shorthand visual language to communicate complex ideas. That theme set the tone of the slightly random and obscure selection of subjects and issues the publication adopted, which were left to the Directors of the day. Very hard to find as a collection the publication has included essay by Lewis Mumford to Lethaby and covered architectural building blocks to photography of Doisneau. A full list of the the titles of those in this collection are available on request. We are offering for sale numbers 1-27 all in good condition. Largely from the collection of Gavin Stamp, without identifying bookplate, supplemented with a few issues he was missing and which have been drawn from the collections other owners. The text is printed in black on cream matt paper and the photogravure illustrations on white glossy paper; the coloured frontispiece, illustrating a different version of 'Here we go gathering nuts in May' to that on p.40, is tipped in. The first nineteen panels illustrate mainly nursery rhymes and were made for University College…

Scarce. The six panels for St Thomas's were restored in 2008 and relocated. Painters not identified but both Margaret Thompson and William Rowe were involved in making these. 'Mary, Mary, quite contrary' design on p.19 by Margaret E Thompson identified from V & A catalogue.
