Thomas Okey (1852–1935) was an expert on basket weaving and is also well known for his translations of topographical works. 1334pp, illustrated with twelve hundred and forty engravings on wood. 8vo. Rebound with brown cloth and gilt lettering to make a sturdy copy. Huge early Victorian compendium of information about almost everything technical from printing to glass making etc. by this renowned dictionary maker. This is the first edition but the dictionary was subsequently reprinted in many editions even after the death of Ure in 1857.

Shelf mark on spine and library stamp on rear end paper from Morton Sundour Co. Inc. New York. Lacks front end paper. All patterns are classed according to type and illustrated. 3rd printing, signed by the author on fep. The book indicates the expansion of the UK market into the American one.

x+226pp plus 36 plates from drawings by Wilfrid Drake. 4to in cloth-backed boards, slightly scuffed and bumped at corners and spine, but generally vg. Internally there is some spotting, confined to endpapers and the first 20pp. Important early survey of stained glass, extending from the seventh century to the Gothic revival. Later chapters deal with Heraldry, Swiss glass (as a point of comparison), decay and advice for the collector. With useful appendices and bibliographies of early material. Many of the lovely full page plates are in colour.

304pp + lxxi + [4]pp appendix +270 plates + fold out plan of the exhibition forming last page. Red gilt decorated loth. Head and base of spine chipped with small tear at head of spine. Decorated end papers, these a little age toned. The exhibition included examples of the latest fire fighting equipment and there was also a substantial loan of items on the history of fire including paintings, models, historical equipment etc. Sachs is best known for his writing on Theatre Architecture. Sach wrote the introduction to this huge catalogue.

Written by the author for both artist and general reader 'with an antiquarian turn of mind'. Chapters include Designing Scale Drawings, Cartoons and the Outline, The Various Kinds of Glass-Cutting for Windows, The Colours and Brushes used in Glass Paining, and Fret Lead Glazing. With 24-page 'Abridged Catalogue of Special Technical Books'. Two colour plates, called for on title page, not present, as usual.

London Pentagram Design 1976

24pp illustrated in b/w. Pentagram published the first three letters of a dictionary of visual metaphors drawn together by Philip Thompson and Peter Davenport. The publication contains examples of how designers have used these clichés as a shorthand visual language to communicate complex ideas. It was the first of an occasional series which continues upto date. Very good copy although one or two thumb marks on some text pages where pages have been turned.

Crowood 1984

200pp illustrated with50 colour, 200 b&w plates. A comprehensive survey of the Regency furniture and interior views which appeared in the 'Repository of Arts' between 1809-1828 with a descriptive text and background information. The illustrations provide a valuable source book for furniture design, interior decoration and window curtain treatments.

One of 241 of 300 copies. 92pp 32 wood engravings by Agnes Miller Parker, 3 half-tones of the young artist at her easel, with her fellow students at the Glasgow School of Art and, later in life, holding one of her Siamese cats + further sketches in black and white + one in colour "The horsefair". 230x280mm Half blue cloth with paper label on spine, Claire Mazairezyk paste paper covered boards. Good in slip case with paper label. Paper label on slip case a little foxed.

London Heal and Son and printed at the Arden Press nd [1902]

12mo Original gray paper covered boards, cloth backstrip title label in read and black pasted onto front board. 22pp + 2pp including advertisement for Heal's catalogue. Boards a little dusty and cloth a little more so else good copy. End papers slightly browned. Book by the typographer and journalist Joseph Thorp (1873-1962) offering independent polemical notes on taste, the traditions of Heals as a source of good taste in design and "directing inspiration" Lovely wood block full page illustrations throughout. Thorp moved form working at the Arden Press. He was involved in the Curwen Press and wrote later in life a biography of Eric Gill.

Edinburgh Design and Industries Association (Edinburgh Branch) 1917

23pp. Pamphlet containing a D.I.A Address by Frank Pick. Paper wrappers with paste down label. Very good ephemeral item. First pamphlet to be published by the DIA Edinburgh Branch. Pick was working for London Transport at the time towards unifying its brand. The key principles to make good design are explored in this pamphlet. Scarce.

24pp illustrated with 4 chromolithographed plates. 4to. Original wraps preserved within recent gilt lettered cloth binding to make a very good copy. Print edition of a paper read before the British Archaeological Association 1st March 1882. Pages a little worn at edges else very good.
