Royal Commission on the Distribution of the Industrial Population Report
London HMSO Cmd 6153 1938
320pp Ownership name of George Whipp on upper wrapper. In 1938 Chamberlain, as the new Prime Minister, assigned a Royal Commission chaired by Sir Anderson Barlow into the urban concentration of population and industry. The resulting report raised the problem of large towns as a public issue for the first time and concluded that 'planned decentralisation' was favourable. However, owing to the outbreak of war in 1939 the Barlow Report, published in 1940. Within the document it reported on the potential of New Towns and Garden Cities as sites for decentralisation and was indeed a turning point in considering post war New Town developments as part of a National Plan for post war reconstruction.

The New Regional Pattern: Industries and Gardens Workshops and Farms
Chicago Theobald 1949
195 pages, including 121 b&w plates, 4to. Very good indeed in sl. worn dust wrapper which is chipped at head and base of spine.. Useful text by this key architect, urban planner and educator. Hard to find. In the book Hilberseimer aspired to construct an agrarian urbanism which again seems to be a topical subject. , Along side other planners he saw agrarianism as a kind of bridge between the rural practice of subsistence farming and the increasingly vulnerable urban workforce imagining that workers might rotate between factory jobs and collective farm work. Fascinating period item. His unbuilt scheme advocated in this text runs parallel to Frank Lloyd Wright's "Broadacre City" (1934–35),and Andrea Branzi's "Agronica" (1993–94.)
