Farleigh House is a large country house, previously the centre of the Farleigh Hungerford estate, and has sometimes been called Farleigh New Castle. The castle was sold for salvage in 1705 to the Houlton family. It is now a 'romantic ruin' since the 1730s, it retains two of its corner towers and in the ownership of English Heritage. The two sepia photographs usefully show the state of the property and its setting at the time of publication. Uncommon.

    Frontis, iv+96pp. Small 8vo. Blind stamped red cloth with gilt monogram on upper board. Rebacked. Forde Abbey is a privately-owned former Cistercian monastery and Grade I listed building. Forde Abbey was bought by Edmund Prideaux, MP for Lyme Regis and Oliver Cromwell's Attorney General. Before his death in 1659 Prideaux converted the buildings from a monastic residence to a private home. It has 18th century gardens and a landscape park. This early guidebook describes the early history of the estate from the establishment of it as a monastic foundation to its conversion into a country house. Hard to find.

Internally, some discolouration on f.e.p else very clean and bright. Bookplate of Josceline Grove along with descriptions of the books from previous owners pasted down on front end papers. Name of C. L. Chute (Sir Charles Lennard Chute MC 1879 - 1956) inscribed in pen on front paste down.

    xii + 153 + (1) + 9 + (1)pp. Publisher's cloth, rebacked. Rebacked sympathetically. Eckstein was an ironmonger from Lloyd Square, Pentonville, who specialised in stoves and cooking ranges and inevitably with all the associated problems of smoking chimneys and inadequate ventilation he worked to establish solutions to smoking chimneys. This short book is largely devoted to the correct design of flues, so crucial for the effective working of the fire beneath. Hard to find.

The third edition of this book had been published and reached a significant value in terms of reputation just before Chambers died and by the 1820s there was a pressure to reprint. This fourth edition is useful in that Gwilt included for the first time notes on the earlier editions and a biographical memoir of Chambers by the author Thomas Hardwick. Holmes has used this Folio to continue his explorations by creating twenty silkscreen fragments which when put together create dramatic 4 x 5 foot detail of Richard Rogers' hi-tech Inmos building.
