ALS to Gavin Stamp dated 29 May 2004 and 22 June 2004 1. Written on the back of a postcard featuring Leeds, St Johns the Evangelist with PS note mentioning it was to be totally refurbished from 17th July. Text concerns recollections, the architect J H Parker in the initial lines but moves on to Normandy churches recalled from when Scarfe was there in the war. Recounts the murder of 20 Canadian POWS at the HW of Kurt Meyer in WWII and his subsequent death in prison after the Nuremberg Trials. 2. Second Card, written from 3 Burkitt Road, Woodbridge when he sent Gavin Stamp the two photographs which are of Calvados. These were sent to thank him for sending a copy of the JSAH article on High Victorian Gothic.

London The Monotype Corporation Limited nd

An envelope containing four editions of the Type-Specimen Pamphlet "Twenty-One Classic Type Faces" published by The Monotype Corporation Limited London to aid the comparison of type behaviour. No date c 1959. Edition A [Letterpress on Antiques Papers], Edition B [Letterpress on Coated Paper] C [Augmented reprint by Photo-Offset] and Edition D [Ditto, by Rotary Photogravure]. Each version of the pamphlet has 8pp printed in red and black. Brown envelope with card title page, this slightly dusty. This initially was attached to the flap of the envelope but the glue has perished. Lovely item. Great for showing the impact in terms of type behaviour dependent on the selection of the paper type and print method.

London Nd Donald Currie & Co Managers, 1910

Unpaginated 6pp prelims, 30 sepia postcards in a small rexine covered binding designed to allow cards to be removed by tearing perforations. The cards show the ship's activities which passengers could participate in along with images of places visited on route between Southampton and the Cape, South Africa. Memorandum pages between the images are used for printed explanations of deck games in some cases. Shaky at binding else good copy of a scarce souvenir publication. Paste downs have adverts for hotels on them. Possibly lacks rear end paper. Dedication of free end paper "To Ma & Pa this book is the best I have seen illustrating the voyage to the Cape" dated 9 September 1910 and initialled A G. Another postcard album appears to have been published in parallel but this stands alone. The Union Castle Line was formed from the merger of the Union Line and Castle Shipping Lines in 1903 and operated until 1977. It also incorporated the Royal Mail Service.

Concertina photograph album c1953 -1957 26 photographs, 25 tipped in. 125 x169mm portrait. Orange cloth. Missing original fastener. Records a photo shoot with designer and model in a garden. Photographs by K[arl] L[udwig] Haenchen, [ b 1909 d 2003 ]. Signed by the designer Hans Gehringer. In the period from 1930 until the second world war he was considered one of the most important German Fashion Photographers. After the war he increasingly focused on photographing celebrities and diversified his career into film and composition of music. This album represents the transition in his work. The photographs record the fashion designer in his garden with his wife and another woman posing in various elegant dresses for which he became renowned as part of the post war German fashion scene. The loose image with the stamp of K L Haenchen dated 1-9-53 – dedication signed by Hans Gehringer 5-9-1957.

Portsmouth no date c 1940 -1948

Twenty-six black and white photographs pasted into a period album + three additional photographs of the same subjects loosely inserted. Landscape shaped album with cloth covered boards. Embossed circle on upper boards. Boards worn and dusty and rear inner hinge detached. Mostly images are of St Cutbert and St Aidan Church, Portsmouth. 16 black and white photographs of the Church. Three show the interior before damage occurred and 13 afterwards. A further four photographs show the local community; one of which is a post war street party. There are additionally five small photographs of the church hall which operated as a church during the war. One shows a bombed-out house. Photograph sizes vary from 260x210mm to small scale images 55 x 85mm [ of the hall] Several photographs have the embossed stamp of "Portsmouth and Sunderland Newspapers Ltd.". Two images show memorials of flowers set up in the damaged church and further one is a miniature cenotaph. These are particularly interesting for their documentary value of commemorating the impact of war damage. Fascinating album. Photographs all very good but some poorly pasted into the album. No captions. Album itself, worn but a great record of one building and its associated community. This church was damaged twice. The first damage to the church buildings occurred on November 10th 1940, when a high explosive bomb fell, tore a hole in the North side of the nave. On April 17th 1941, a landmine in Hayling Avenue destroyed the East end of the church, severely damaging the rest of the building and completely flattening the Parish Hall (the original Mission Church). The church was initially partially restored and then further work was undertaken in 1957. In the early 2000s the church was partially converted to house several community facilities including a doctor's surgery. 96pp. green cloth covered boards with gilt embossing on upper boards and blind stamped cloth on verso. Measures c. W285mm x H370mm. "Charles Gordon Cater. June 1886" written in ink on front paste down, above a small label for "W. Lockwood & Co. Stationers &c.,..." Laid down cuttings from magazines alongside postcards, greetings cards, calling cards, die-cut paper scraps, illustrations, reproductions of paintings etc. and the occasional comment or reference written in neat hand in blue or red ink. A single page, likely from another album is loosely inserted into the album. Some comical placing and collaging of elements on some of the pages. The inclusion of a full page image of General Gordon (1833 - 1885) on the first and last page suggests a possible interest with the General, if only in the shared names, Charles Gordon. A very carefully put together album with some interesting socio-historical and artistic references placed alongside various more personal mementos. Shows some signs of its age with pages crockled - in part due to the paste used in the album's creation. A very few of the stuck down elements have torn slightly or are missing and the boards are a little marked and bumped at the corners and top of spine. Nonetheless this is a very good, bright and hugely engaging item.
