    Frontis + xii + 352 + [8]pp, plus two engraved maps, one folding, and three plates 'engraved from drawings by Mr Hornsey', following pages 144, 266 and 282. 3 inserted blanks with additional pasted-in images, apparently tourist engravings of the town's sites, make this an interesting extra-illustrated copy. 4to. Nicely rebound in 19th-century quarter calf, with marbled boards and edges; a note on the fep reads 'M. A. Naylor, Scarborough. Rebound 1874'. A few pages have some very slight offsetting, and there are minor age marks to the prelims and pages 197-202, 235-58 and 320-30. Overall a nice copy in vg condition. A wealthy former mariner, Hinderwell (1744-1825) was also an antiquary and a keen…

A faithful facsimile with cloth substituted for the leather binding of the original. laid in is a copy of a letter from W. R Hasbrouck, the publisher. Known as the "exhibition houses" and set in their garden suburb the houses still survive and are fine examples of their time. Among the 100 architects who designed and built for the exhibition included C. R. Ashbee, M. H. Baillie Scott, William Curtis Green, Charles S. Spooner, Clough Williams-Ellis, Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin. Rare.

Fascinating publication on design remedies which can be achieved by using a consultant. A greater part of Mercer's life was spent working for The Studio and he was editor of Modern Publicity, Modern Posters and Art and Industry. He was on the board of the RSA for many years and this book was produced from a paper he wrote for the RSA and for which he was awarded a silver medal.

The reports meld together socio-economic issues, researched at Glasgow University with Planning matters spearheaded from Edinburgh University b Robert H Matthew and Johnson Marshall. Comprehensive surveys made in the mid 1960s intended to lead to planning proposals which could be responsive to change through their flexibility.
