The Society was established in London in 1887 to promote exhibitions of applied and decorative arts alongside fine arts. It is renowned for promoting the Arts and Crafts Movement in Britain which in turn promoted hand craftsmanship. The exhibitions were confined to members. The first exhibition was held in the New Galleries Regent Street. The organization stood out, in contrast to similar exhibition societies of the period, for its inclusion of women although The Rules, do not clearly indicate this. This set of rules was issued prior to the 11th Exhibition that they held, by which time the venue was at the Royal Academy.
