A proposal for a popular music theatre in Paris aimed at those unable to afford the Théâtre-Lyrique, or Théâtre Chatelet was widely debated. Viel's concept was to make a large capacity auditorium. Adophe Sax had made designs for such a place exhibited at the Paris Exposition of 1867 and Viel hoped to built on the concept exhibited there. Others felt that subsidised theatre would be a better option where all could attend the same venue. Very good copy.
