A Brief Survey of the Objects of Graphic Art exhibited at the Imperial and Government Printing Establishment at Vienna, at the London Exhibition
London Samuel Bagster and Sons 1851
Engraving 140x210mm advertising the Union of the Graphic Arts, executed by the Imperial and Government Establishment in Vienna 1851: a delightful engraving - slight water mark stain on one margin else good. Illustrates putti representing aspects of printing set in gothic arches. Two colour lettering. Loosely inserted into the Brief Survey of Objects of Grpahic art 16pp 8vo stapled Original printed wrappers. A very bright copy. Together these two items provide an important perspective on the production of this pioneer printing establishment under the direction of Alois Auer [ 1813-1869] Austrian printer, inventor and botanical illustrator. At the Great Exhibition, the display included Auer's collection of the Lord's Prayer in 608 languages, chomo-lithography and photography by Paul Pretsch. See Bigmore & Wyman 111 p13 which cites only an edition of 1852 with a variant title page to this one. From the collection of Robin de Beaumont. The pamphlet includes his small ownership ticket pasted to the verso of the upper wrapper. Lovely item. The advertising engraving was probably a "give-away" at the exhibition stand. Scarce.
