The Royal Festival Hall Organ: Programme for Inaugural Concert, Wednesday 24th March, 1954
London: Royal Festival Hall 1954
13pp + 4pp advertisements. Wrappers in good condition, a little yellowed and worn at edges. 3 b/w photographs showing the organ in situ and under construction, plus an elevation showing its compartments. A lovely ephemeral item, celebrating the installation of this 7866 pipe organ. With brief essays by Downes on its design, C.T.L. Harrison on its construction in Durham, and Frank Howes on 'The Organ and the Public'. The organ was restored in 2005-07. Loosely inserted are a 1973 4pp promotional booklet for Harrison & Harrison Ltd. organ builders, and an offprint of an article by Paul Hale on 'Music and Musicians' in New College Oxford 1397-1979. Ralph Downes was the father of the architectural historical of Kerry Downes.
