YORK MYSTERY PLAYS AND OUR SHOP
The York Mystery Plays are being performed in the Museum Gardens just behind our shop from 2nd-27th August. To mark the occasion we are exhibiting three new paintings by Edinburgh artist, Amy Dennis, which capture the spirit of the plays in their setting against the backcloth of St Mary's Abbey ruins. We also are pleased to be also offer for sale the famous Edward Bawden railway poster he made in 1954 which feature the Mystery Plays being performed in the very same setting that is being used today. Bawden designed this poster for British Railways (North Eastern Region), depicts three scenes from the York Mystery Plays, with a backdrop of St Mary’s Abbey. The design and style is unconventional for a railway poster, standing out against others of the same period. The distinctive feel of the linocut works extremely well with the historic theme of the Mystery Plays. We also have a number of books relating to the Mystery Plays, theatre performance and design too.
