Single hand coloured engraving mounted on heavy card as issued, edged in black 440x640mm. This superb single image is of the mosaic pavement at Micklegate Bar, which is now lost. Probably from “Engravings of the Principal Mosaic Pavements which have been discovered in the course of the last and present centuries in various parts of Great Britain” or one of the appendices to this collection. This fabulous collection is considered one of the most remarkable English engraved hand coloured publication of its time..It was published by subscription. Not more than 30 or 40 copies [of the bound sets] were completed' (Lowndes). Bound sets were available from 1804 which suggests this print formed one of those in those forming the later appendix. William Fowler (1761-1832) was a local Lincolnshire builder whose interest in recording the Roman tessellated pavements and mosaics discovered in Lincolnshire between 1747 and 1797, won him much acclaim in his lifetime. Sympathetically mounted and framed under glass.
